Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston has revealed that he’s “recorded something very special” for the show’s upcoming 60th anniversary.
Eccleston, who appeared on the BBC series as the Ninth Doctor, offered fans a tease of what they can expect from Big Finish’s audio tribute to Doctor Who‘s impressive milestone.
Speaking at a recent fan event, Christopher confirmed that the audio series’ celebration will focus on the story of David Warner.
“I’ve recorded something very special for the 60th anniversary,” he said (via RadioTimes.com). “And for me it was all about working with this incredible actor and incredible human being called David Warner.”
Adding that the 60th anniversary special is his “favourite” recording yet, the actor promised fans that it will “be worth the wait.”
“David Warner is extraordinary,” Christopher added. “And if any actor should have been the Doctor, it would have been David.”
Elsewhere, returning showrunner Russell T Davies recently offered an update of his own – hinting at the possible explanations for David Tennant’s Doctor Who comeback.
Offering a cryptic clue about Ten’s involvement in the anniversary special, Davies suggested that his excuse to return for a one-off episode may involve “a mysteriously forgotten excursion for the TARDIS in between ‘Planet of the Ood’ and ‘Sontaran Stratagem'”.
“Or maybe a multiverse thing, they’re all the rage these days,” he added. “Maybe this is the Doctor and Donna [Catherine Tate] from Universe 557, all set to collide with our own.
“Then again, maybe, just maybe, this return is so impossible that it’s actually an intricate illusion created by an old enemy of the Doctor’s.”
Maybe…
Doctor Who‘s next special premieres in October 2022 on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max.
