Doctor Who star Freema Agyeman has been cast alongside Lily Allen for the latter’s debut TV role in Sky comedy Dreamland.
Filming has begun in Margate and the show is based on Sky’s 2018 BAFTA-winning short written by Sharon Horgan. The comedy-drama follows a family of four sisters and their secrets, lies, loves and aspirations.
Agyeman will be playing eldest sister Trish, who is pregnant for the third time with her partner Spencer (Kiell Smith-Bynoe). However, she has decided this time she’s going to have a girl.
Meanwhile, her two younger siblings, Claire (Gabby Best) and Leila (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) join their mum and their Margate-legend nan, played by Frances Barber and Sheila Reid, respectively, as they try “manifesting” a little girl during Trish’s ‘mani-festival’.
The final sister Mel, which sees Allen making her first role on TV, returns unexpectedly into her family’s lives, and this threatens to destabilise everything and with a knock on the door, their ‘Dreamland’ is over.
Sky also confirm James Bond star Samantha Bond will be making a guest star appearance as Orla.
Catastrophe star Horgan will return to produce the series with Clelia Mountford under their production company Merman. The banner has been behind some of the best and award-winning comedies in recent years.
They include Motherland, Frayed and the Aisling Bea-led This Way Up, and they promise the series will be “a heartfelt exploration of the family relationships between these strong, vibrant women.”
Emma Jane Unsworth will serve as showrunner and is a relative newcomer having worked as a writer for the BBC comedy The Outlaws and penned the screenplay for the indie comedy-drama Animals, starring Holiday Grainger and Alia Shawkat.
Dreamland will air on Sky Comedy and NOW in 2023.
