The 74-year-old actress’s agent announced the news this afternoon (March 30).

O’Mara’s spokesperson confirmed that she passed away this morning in a Sussex nursing home following a short illness.

Phil Belfield said: “She was extraordinary, she had so much energy and vitality with a love for theatre and acting.

“A shining star has gone out, and Kate will be dearly missed by all who knew and have worked with her.”

The actress, who was married three times, is survived by her sister and fellow actress Belinda Carroll. Her son Dickon died in late 2012.

O’Mara was widely known for playing Alexis Colby’s scheming sister Cassandra “Caress” Morrell in the US soap Dynasty, and also appeared in shows such as Howard’s Way, Triangle, Bad Girls and Absolutely Fabulous during a television career which spanned six decades.

Her final TV role came in a 2012 episode of Benidorm, where she played hotel guest Mrs Simmonds.

In an October 2013 interview with Digital Spy, she expressed a desire to return to screens as Doctor Who villain The Rani, and described Peter Capaldi as an “ideal” choice to play The Doctor, comparing him to Jon Pertwee.
