Time War spin-off
Sir Derek Jacobi will return to the worlds of Doctor Who as the villainous Master once more – 10 years after he first played the part.
He’ll star in a new series of audio plays, exploring what happened to The Master before he resurfaced in ‘Utopia’.
Doctor Who: The War Master – Volume One from Big Finish will follow “the exploits of the Doctor’s arch-enemy during the course of the devastating Time War”.
“I didn’t expect to come back to it all these years later,” Jacobi said. “But I was thrilled to be remembered. The plots in all these episodes have been very good indeed, very interesting, very dramatic, and beautifully written. The whole process has been a delight!”
Four-hour long episodes will be released in a single boxset in December 2017 – ‘Beneath the Viscoid’ by Nicholas Briggs, ‘The Good Master’ by Janine H Jones, ‘The Sky Man’ by James Goss and ‘The Heavenly Paradigm’ by Guy Adams.
“[Derek’s] incarnation is very much the ‘Hannibal Lecter’ of Time Lords – intelligent, charming, but thoroughly ruthless – we had a lot of fun in the studio bringing the War Master back to life,” said producer and director Scott Handcock. “It’s been a gift of a project, and we can’t wait for listeners to hear it!”
The War Master: Volume One will also feature Jacqueline King – known for playing Sylvia Noble in Doctor Who – Jonathan Bailey – of Broadchurch and Doctor Who’s ‘Time Heist‘ – and Nicholas Briggs as the Daleks.
The first box-set is available for pre-order from bigfinish.com on CD priced £23 and for download at £20.
It’s one of a series of projects by Big Finish delving into the worlds of new series Doctor Who – with new plays reuniting David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor with Billie Piper’s Rose coming in November, following May 2016’s The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 1, released in May 2016, which saw him back together with Catherine Tate’s Donna.
